The Infiorata di Noto: when an entire street is covered in flowers
Every year in May, Via Nicolaci is transformed into a carpet of petals spanning over 700 m². One of the most spectacular events in south-east Sicily.

Some events sound almost too beautiful to be real. The Infiorata di Noto is one of them. Every year, in the month of May, an entire street in the historic centre of Noto is covered in flower petals. Not a few arrangements here and there. An entire street. Over more than 700 m², artists create giant paintings directly on the ground using nothing but petals, leaves and seeds. All of it framed by the most photographed baroque balconies in Sicily.
A tradition born from an encounter
The Infiorata di Noto was born in the 1980s, inspired by a much older tradition: that of the infioratori of Genzano, near Rome, who for over two centuries had been covering the path of the Corpus Domini procession with flowers. Artists from Genzano came to Noto, discovered Via Nicolaci with its gentle slope, its baroque palaces and sculpted balconies, and understood that this street was made to become a carpet of flowers.
Since then, the event has taken place every year and draws thousands of visitors from around the world. What started as a simple floral tribute has become one of the most important cultural events in Sicily.
How it works
It all begins on Friday. The maestri infioratori first trace the outlines of the compositions in chalk and white paint, directly on the road surface. Then, from Friday evening through the entire night, they fill each section with thousands of petals of roses, carnations, gerberas and daisies. Every colour, every shade is placed by hand. By dawn on Saturday, the carpet is ready.
Sixteen paintings on a single street
Via Nicolaci hosts sixteen compositions, created by Italian and international artists. Each edition has its own theme. The paintings are on display from Saturday to Tuesday, from 9am to 11pm. You discover them from a raised walkway that runs alongside the street, to protect the works. The perspective shifts as you climb the slope: each panel reveals itself differently depending on the angle.
Much more than a flower carpet
The Infiorata is part of a broader programme, the Primavera Barocca, which brings Noto to life over several weeks. Around the flower carpet, there is a historical procession in 17th-century costumes with musicians and flag-wavers, concerts, exhibitions and tastings. The entire historic centre lives to the rhythm of the event.
What makes the Infiorata so special
It is not just the beauty of the compositions that stays with you. It is the contrast between the fragility of the petals and the solidity of the baroque stone all around. It is the fact that dozens of artists work through the night to create something that will last only a few days. It is this idea of an ephemeral art, made by hand, petal by petal, in a setting that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And then there is the setting itself. Via Nicolaci rises gently between the palaces, with the famous sculpted balconies of Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata overlooking the scene. The morning light grazes the golden façades, and the evening light transforms the colours of the petals. It is a spectacle that changes from hour to hour.
Practical tips
The Infiorata takes place every year in the month of May. The compositions are on display from Saturday to Tuesday. To make the most of it, go early in the morning or in the evening: the light is more beautiful and the crowds more manageable. Monday and Tuesday are the quietest days.
Noto is about a 30-minute drive from Marzamemi. Parking in the centre is very limited during the event, so plan to arrive early or park on the outskirts.
An event you will never regret seeing
You can find hundreds of photos of the Infiorata online. They do not do justice to what you feel when you are there. The scale of the compositions, the details only visible up close, the scent of fresh petals mixed with warm stone, the atmosphere in the surrounding streets. It is the kind of event you are glad you did not miss, and that you end up recommending to everyone.
